Tornado - 2020
Cedar, Walnut, Pine, Leather, 17-Year-Old Tennessee Walking Horse Hair, Lacquer, Acrylic, Steel
21.5” x 9.5” x 21.5”
Tornado was born October 10th, 2020 and named after my friend Daria’s horse. The sculpture was hand-carved using walnut, cedar and hundreds of individually sharpened wooden spikes. The tail comes from a 17-year-old Tennessee walking horse named Golden Man. Tornado was inspired by that subtle but aggressive transitional moment in our lives where external forces try and tame our childhood sense of freedom, curiosity and wonder. To celebrate his birth, Tornado and I camped overnight at Joshua Tree National Park, and hiked to the top of a mountain together.
